Guitars from the Collection of the late Country Music Hall of Famer Merle Travis to be Featured at Christie's Musical Instruments Auction
Christies is honored to announce that guitars from the collection of the late Merle Travis will be auctioned in the Fine Musical Instruments sale on April 2 in New York. Influential to many musicians, Travis was recognized for his unique finger-picking guitar style, called "Travis Picking." Because of his prolific writing and performing he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as well as the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The Gibson Style Super 400 offered in for auction is an original production example made by Bigsby and was personally given to Travis by Bigsby. The original Gibson tailpiece was removed by Travis and replaced with the "Patent Pending" Bigsby tailpiece that it now carries. Also noteworthy is that this example from 1962 is custom fitted with two single coil P-90 pickups, rather then the Humbucking pickups, standard for many Gibson electrics by 1962.
His first public performance would be on a local radio amateur hour in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1936. It lead to multiple job offers and then a permanent position on Cincinnati's WLW, which was then the Mid-West's foremost radio station for Country Music programming. A move to Hollywood, California, in 1944 began his national exposure with work in film, live performance and a recording contract with Capital Records. In 1947, he wrote his first hit made by popular Tex Williams, Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (that Cigarette). In 1953, his next break came when he won the role of the guitar picking GI in the film From Here to Eternity where he performed the movie's signature song Re-Enlistment Blues. In 1955, Tennessee Ernie Ford covered an earlier Travis composition, Sixteen Tons which quickly became a national cross-over hit furthering his recognition.
Dave truly is a unique voice on his instrument, blending a long lineage of players into a vital and original style. He continues to push the envelope with his unique musical vision, which is apparent on this project "Mahoney's Way". The CD features such musical heavyweights as, Nile Rodgers, Marc Ribot, Mark Egan, and Victor Jones. It's rare to find such talent in today's market place.
"The energy Tuesday nights (at Lucky Lounge) is great, sometimes we go in there and play what we know, sometimes it's spontaneous composition. Last night the first half of our show we played stuff we've never played before, jamming... and the crowd loves that, it's a whole different energy," says Sosa, "Our goal was to make that night something that no one could compete with."

In 1946, Merle Travis commissioned an electric guitar to be made by the machinist and inventor Paul A. Bigsby and the result is often referred by some as the first solid-body electric guitar. Today the guitar resides in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Enamored by the feel and playability of the neck, Travis returned to Bigsby requesting that a custom neck be fitted on his Martin D-28. This resulted in the first re-necking done by Bigsby on another manufacturer's guitar. It would be followed by countless other requests from performers including Lefty Frizell, Zeke Clements and Hank Thompson. This guitar, which accompanied Travis through the majority of his career, was used to compose such hits as Sixteen Tons and Dark as a Dungeon.

About the fourth track on the new CD, "Long Way Home" Sosa relates " I had this idea in my head about Mississipi Blues, Delta, Robert Johnson kind of thing but I wanted to make it hip hop. So the song that fits with the record, but it's not the whole band."

The stellar, diverse band, who has managed to fill the Lucky Lounge every Tuesday night to capacity for three years running, is Carlos Sosa's pet project. Sosa, who is currently the Vice President of Texas chapter of the Recording Academy of America, better known as the GRAMMY Academy, is fresh off a tour with Kelly Clarkson.

butter LONDON Launches New Fall Colors at the 2006 MTV Music Awards
New nail salon treats MTV Award Nominees and VIPs to manicures featuring new trendsetting colours.
*The biggest unknown record deal out of Austin, but that's another press release.
"The other two bands playing with us are "The Handsomes" from Houston, they played ska and rock, and the other band is "Pilaseca" from San Miguel, Mexico. The best way to describe them is a Mexican "Jamiriquoi", they play with us sometimes and they have a huge fan base in Mexico. They are like funk acid jazz, disco."
The fan demographic for this band is as diverse as the band. "The B-Boys hip hop dance troupe comes and the crowd gets around them while they dance. They've done this thirty or forty times. Then I've seen people in their 70s at the show," he continued.

"You want some funk with that jazz? Then don't hesitate to pick up Mahoney's Way (Roberts Music Group) by Dave Mullen & Butta. Mullen's music and sax works is reminiscent of mid to late 80's Prince, or more specifically the sax work of Eric Leeds. He is able to play a bit of quiet storm when he wants, but seems to love getting down and playing for the fun of it, whether it's a mid-tempo ballad or something to move a dance floor, as is the case with Latin/hip-hop tinged "Squid" (which could easily find its way onto a Groove Collective release. The ratio of instrumentals to vocal tracks are split right in the middle, and while Mullen's take on Stevie Wonder's 'As' is quite good, it is "Lost Souls" that is the best vocal track on the CD. As with 'As', 'Lost Souls' features the vocals of Lisala Beatty, whose voice reminds me of all of the comforts of home. Here, Mullen moves to the background briefly but compliments Beatty's voice in fine form.Mahoney's Way can fit any mood.... He can easily fit in with a style similar to David Sanborn, but can get more bop-friendly in a Michael Brecker fashion, without losing any strength in either," by da bookman Buzz Grinder music news.
